RuneEra is built on the Godot Engine using C# for robust performance and maintainability. The game architecture follows Entity Component System (ECS) design principles, enhanced with Reactive Programming patterns to ensure efficient data flow and system interactions.

Performance & Scalability

The game leverages multi-threading at the entity level through C#'s Task system, enabling concurrent processing of individual units, environmental elements, wildlife, and global systems. When entities interact, sophisticated locking mechanisms ensure thread safety while maintaining optimal performance. All core simulation logic runs within the C# environment, with Godot Engine handling visualization and rendering.

Execution Spaces

Godot Thread (Single-Threaded)

  • Purpose: Handles all visualization and rendering operations
  • Responsibilities:
    • Updates visual positioning of all game objects
    • Manages animation systems and visual effects
    • Processes user interface rendering
    • Maintains frame-rate stability for smooth visual experience

Game Thread (Multi-Threaded)

  • Purpose: Processes core gameplay logic and mechanics
  • Responsibilities:
    • Executes all game state updates for each frame step
    • Handles combat calculations and interactions
    • Manages resource processing and settlement activities
    • Processes player input and game events

Background Thread (Multi-Threaded)

  • Purpose: Manages computationally intensive operations
  • Responsibilities:
    • Calculates complex pathfinding and navigation systems
    • Processes world generation and area loading
    • Handles faction AI decision-making
    • Manages long-running simulations and calculations
